Graduation: The Little Cottage Industry
WOW! I just graduated after too long at UTS. Although I have to say that while it may be trendy and cool to "bag" how terrible and artificial and plain silly it is to have a ceremony like that...I WAS REALLY REALLY EXCITED! I was really happy and it was really cool to have a feeling of pride. Sorry about not get first class honours and all but gosh, there's nothing like getting those pieces of paper! I wasn't prepared for how good that would feel. Also how cool it really is to swan around in academic dress.
Another confession? I was sucked in by the whole little industry that surrounds this time. The "professional" photos, the "graduation" bear that is wearing the same colours as me! The laser engraved graduation plaque and my "instant" life-saving framing (of my degree certificate)! All this stuff adds up my friends...but I thought every penny was worth it!
My friend Lakshmi really scared me when she said that we would never get another degree certificate again if we lost or destroyed this one. Any replacement would not have the University Seal and would have that this is a COPY emblazoned across it. I guess it's not really fair that the whole time at uni boils down to this certificate but for some degrees it does. It really brings up a fundamental problem with how they treat degrees. I mean the point is we're supposed to have learnt some darn thing or other and the actual degree cert is just to "prove" it but shouldn't we be able to prove it cos we just KNOW OUR SH*T? It's too bad if you don't know your sh*t ...then you better keep that certificate in mint condition mate!
Looking back at the pictures of the day I really saw how genuinely HAPPY I was which is so cool.
And with my great Oscar-style ending to every speech...
Thank you to my family, especially my parents, my friends, especially the ones who kept me sane at uni and out of it too...and my boyfriend who really was very supportive and who yes...helped me to get the best marks I've ever gotten right at the end of my degree!
Without all of you I don't think I could have gotten through it all and I don't think I can honestly look back at uni with any happiness and remember so many terrible times that were made good, and so many good times made even better!
Kisses and hugs to you ALL!
